There is a moment midway through this film when the whole shape of it quietly shifts beneath you, and you realise you have been watching something far more profound than you expected.
Hirokazu Kore-eda has long been cinema's great chronicler of the family, but here he turns to a household bound not by blood but by circumstance and choice.
Shoplifters is a tender, devastating portrait of a makeshift family scraping by on the margins of Tokyo — and a film that asks, with extraordinary warmth, what it really means to belong to someone.
It is, without question, one of the finest films of the decade.
